Joby has just recently released the Gorillatorch Switchback, which is the first one in the Gorillatorch range that is specifically designed for the outdoors. The Switchback can be used as a headlamp or camping lantern with up to 130 lumens of ultra-bright LED light.
It is bright enough to provide sufficient lighting for a large tent and you can choose from 3 other brightness settings: 5 lumens, 20 lumens and 80 lumens. There are 2 white LEDs for flood lighting, 2 red ones to preserve night vision and one ultra-bright LED.
The three bendable and flexible legs can be wrapped around tree branches or poles and thanks to the innovative design, it doesn’t need a flat surface to be able to stand up. You can use the stand as a tripod for your point-and-shoot camera.
Unfortunately the neodymium magnets are absent in this model so you can’t stick it on metal surfaces. It makes the Gorillatorch lighter but I prefer it with the magnets because I want to also use it at home where the magnets would be more useful.
The Switchback has a battery life of 72 hours from a pair of AA batteries. The lamp housing measures 2.6″ x 1.3″ x 0.8″ and the battery housing is 3″ x 1.8″ x 1.1″. In headlamp mode the Switchback measures 4.5″ x 3.3″ x 2.1″ closed and 6.5″ x 3.3″ x 2.1″ open. Weighs only 8.8 oz.
