Both synthetic and down sleeping bags have their pros and cons. Synthetic bags are easier to maintain and dry and down bags are warmer and lighter. Down bags are expensive and you have to be more careful with them. So what happens when you combine both materials into one sleeping bag?
Nanok claims that they have created a sleeping bag that provides “optimal protection against the elements”, the Airlock-5. The hybrid sleeping bag has a down-filled inner layer and a synthetic outer layer. The down maximizes insulation and minimizes weight and bulk while the synthetic fill protects the down from moisture and keeps insulating even when wet. It has a down-filled baffle that prevents warm air from escaping.
When they say “optimal protection against the elements” they don’t mean that it’s good for extreme weather. In fact the temperature rating for this sleeping bag is 22ºC for comfort, -1ºC limit and -22ºC extreme. This bag might be great in mild weather especially when it’s prone to condensation inside the tent or bivvy bag.
